A narrow ribbon of evening light sweeps across a forested mountainside in Storm Light in the Collegiate Wilderness. Above the valley, heavy clouds gather over the rugged Colorado Rockies. The contrast transforms a quiet alpine landscape into a fleeting display of light, shadow and atmosphere.
The illuminated slope leads the eye deep into the scene. Meanwhile, the surrounding forest and shadowed mountains preserve the wilderness’s mysterious character. A small backcountry road curves through the valley, offering a subtle sense of scale and inviting viewers to imagine the journey ahead.
I created this panoramic photograph in Colorado’s Collegiate Peaks region near the Huron Peak trail corridor. The Collegiate Peaks Wilderness (external site, opens in new tab) encompasses more than 167,000 acres across three national forests. Its high summits, broad valleys and extensive alpine terrain make it one of Colorado’s most remarkable wilderness landscapes.
