Bands of fiery orange and deep blue stretch across the early morning sky above Colorado’s Sawatch Range. Below them, layers of high mountain ridges settle into shadow along the Colorado Trail’s spectacular Collegiate West route.

I captured this panoramic landscape while backpacking between Cottonwood Pass and Monarch Pass. This section of the Colorado Trail travels through some of the state’s most impressive high country. Collegiate West also shares its route with the Continental Divide Trail, creating miles of elevated views across the central Colorado mountains.

On this morning, the mountains themselves became silhouettes beneath an extraordinary sky. A long band of clouds caught the first warm light and seemed to echo the ridgelines below. Cooler blues settled across the mountains as yellow and orange light lingered along the western horizon.

A faint mountain road winds through the lower portion of the scene. Its small scale offers a sense of perspective against the surrounding landscape. Above it, the successive ridges create a natural progression toward the distant sunset.

The panoramic format emphasizes the enormous scale of the scene. It also allows the sweeping cloud formation and mountain ridges to move together across the composition.  This image is available in the following formats:
